Examples of early cartoons and illustrations

During my long career as an advertising artist I have done many cartoons as well as ink line drawings. Looking back, I'm even surprised at the variety of work that I produced. I enjoy experimenting with various styles of art and this also enabled me to reinvent myself.

I don't recall what this was done for, possibly friends Magazine.

Many cartoon illustrations were done for Friends Magazine during my early days as a commercial artist.

More Ward's Quarterly illustrations

Here are a few more illustrations done for Ward's Quarterly Magazine while I was the art director. Because of a tight budget I did most of the art using various techniques to make the magazine more interesting visually.

That GOOD GOOD Blog's 1 Year Anniversary Herds of the Fathers Giveaway (CLOSED)

On July 14, 2010, I published my very first blog post. There were no photos in the post. No audio snippets. No links to other web pages. I had absolutely no idea what types of posts I was going to be putting on this blog. All I knew was that I had this somewhat odd concept in my head that seemed to define the creative, entrepreneurial, and awe-inspiring revolution that is taking place amongst my peers. Has there ever been a time when so many young people, especially those of color, were indulging themselves so deeply into the diverse cultures of fashion, art, music, and commerce? Everywhere I look, I see someone my age starting a business, building a brand, creating a masterpiece, doing something! My generation is not sitting still; we are out here hustling. Hard. Bearing witness to so much greatness in the making has been such a beautiful and exciting experience for me. However, being able to share the stories of these amazing young people from near and far with all of you has been nothing short of a blessing. I am so lucky to have over 1,000 readers to talk to about the people, places, sights, and sounds that inspire me. I really am. Even on my worst day, I have something to smile about because of this blog. So thank you, to all of you who took a little time out of your day throughout the past year to visit this blog and to leave some love. There aren’t enough words in the dictionary to describe how much I appreciate it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this giveaway, I have teamed up with one of my favorite companies that I have had the pleasure of featuring on this blog: Herds of the Fathers (click here to read my interview with Tobi Babajide, half of the Herds of the Fathers duo). Street Stylin' with Stockholm

What's up, everyone? I have good news and bad news. The bad news is this is the only post you'll get this week. The good news is this post is good, and you'll probably get a good Life post next week. Why? I'm going to a Leadership Conference in LA until July 31st. I'll tell you more about it next week. =)

Today, I decided to show you a few of my favorite pictures from Stockholm Streetstyle. There are some insanely stylish people just walking around minding their own business. It's amazing.

I once read a quote that said, "Life is too short to wear boring clothes." It applies nicely here, don't you think?

There were so many photos I liked, but I didn't want to overwhelm you all. I'll probably post more pictures from the site in the future. If you want to see more, check out Stockholm Streetstyle HERE.

Do you have any favorites from my favorites here? Let me know!

Charlie Schridde 4/30/1926 - 5/15/2011

I just learned yesterday that artist Charlie Schridde passed away. I worked with Charlie in Detroit for several years, we were associated with a freelance artist group. Charlie was one of the the top illustrators in Detroit at the time. When the illustration business started to falter, Charlie started a new career as a top flight photographer working for many years in the Detroit area. Eventually he moved to California and began painting western rodeo scenes. We have kept in touch over the years, but sad to say, I hadn't spoken to him for several months.

Illustrations for Ward's Quarterly Magazine

In 1965 I was a freelance illustrator and also the art director of an automotive magazine, Ward's Quarterly. The publication had no budget for illustrations, so I did most of the art and a few illustrator friends pitched in occasionally. Below are some of the various styles that I used to add variety to the magazine.

Ever thought about this before?

Here's part of an email that I received some time ago. Just a little something random to entertain you.

Only in America...do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in America...do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

Only in America...do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America...do people leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

Only in America...do people buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Only in America...do banks have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

EVER WONDER...

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

A friend from the heyday of automotive illustration

Yesterday an old friend from fifty years ago, Bob Pearson, visited me. Bob is an award winning automotive artist who learned his craft in the commercial art studios of Detroit during the years when the ad business was booming there. He started out as an apprentice for me and a small group of artists, which included top notch automotive illustrators such as Dave Lindsay, Ted Lodigensky, Jack Mills, Ted Paul, Jim Jackson and Del Nichols. He also worked for other Detroit studios and even became an art director at Campbell Ewald Advertising. Bob later moved to Toronto, Canada and worked for several ad agencies there as an art director. Now retired from the ad business, Bob has returned to his first passion, illustrating cars. If you would like a wonderful portrait of your favorite classic car, give him a call at 416.484.8180. Below are a few examples of Bob's great work.

A Real Person, A Lot Like You

My friend on Google+ posted this video and I find this interesting most specially for those who have an online shop. We all know that testimonials or feedback of buyers to online sellers are important. This video uploaded few weeks ago and I want to share this to you guys.

I feel better now than last week. But its been a week now and I still have colds. I hate it! And feels like I will having a sore throat. So I bought Valda Pastilles menthol to soothes my throat. I used to buy Strepsils menthol before but I have to swallow it and let it stays in your throat until it melts. Though its very effective, there was one time that I almost can't breathe and my chest was so tight, maybe because the strepsils was inside. So there. Hoping that my colds will be gone (NOW.)

Have a great day everyone! :)
